Dr Gorbatov is a Vitreoretinal Surgeon, meaning an ophthalmologist who specialises in treating diseases and disorders of the eye, affecting the retina and the vitreous, by means of surgery, injections, laser or medication.
He studied medicine at the University of Sydney and trained to be an Ophthalmologist at the Sydney Eye Hospital. Further training in retinal diseases was undertaken at the Lions Eye Institute in Perth, working on surgical retina as well as macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy and the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom. The focus of the work at Manchester was in surgical retina especially retinal detachment and severe complications of diabetic retinopathy.
Dr Gorbatov has a teaching hospital appointment at Sydney Eye Hospital. He regularly performs surgery for retinal detachment, vitreous haemorrhage, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, vitreomacular traction, diabetic retinopathy, eye injuries and other retinal disorders. He has a special interest in endoscopic vitrectomy, a rarely required technique for performing vitrectomy surgery in eyes without a clear view through the pupil.

When not fixing retinal detachments he likes to go sailing either socially or racing, or to go skiing with the kids.
